Mel Rojas Jr. (33), former KBO League Most Valuable Player (MVP), returns to KT Wiz.
On the 7th, KT announced, “We have completed contracts with foreign hitter Rojas and pitcher William Cuevas. Rojas was signed for a total of $900,000, and Cuevas was signed for a total of $1.5 million.”
Rojas returned to the KBO League after four seasons.
Rojas, who wore the KT uniform during the 2017 season, quickly blended into the team and displayed his skills. He had a batting average of 0.321, 132 home runs, and 409 RBIs in 511 games over four seasons.
In the 2020 season, he won the KBO League MVP with a batting average of 0.349, 47 home runs, and 135 RBI in 142 games. In 2019 and 2020, he won the Outfielder Golden Glove Award.
Afterwards, he returned to the KBO League after playing in the Japanese Professional Baseball League, Mexican League, and Dominican Winter League.
Rojas said through the club, “I am happy to wear the KT uniform again. I had many good memories while playing at KT. “I’m looking forward to seeing my colleagues and fans again,” he said about signing the contract.
Cuevas will accompany KT next year as well. Cuevas, who first joined hands with KT in 2019, left the team due to elbow surgery at the beginning of the 2022 season. However, he rejoined KT as a substitute player during this season and became the winning percentage leader with 12 wins, no losses and an average ERA of 2.60.
KT general manager Na Do-hyun said, “I watched Rojas consistently even when he played in other leagues. We judged that we were still competitive. “As I am coming to a familiar team, I expect to be able to display my skills,” he said.
He continued, “Cuevas has already proven his skills and there is no problem with his physical condition, so we pushed for a renewal of his contract. “I look forward to him playing an ace role next season as well,” he added.
