Chung Mong-gyu, President of the Korea Football Association
Chung Mong-gyu, president of the Korea Football Association, was elected as a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) executive committee.
The Korea Football Association announced on the 16th, “Chairman Chung Mong-gyu was appointed as the East Asia regional executive committee member at the 2024 Asia AFC general meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand,” and added, “The term of office of the AFC executive committee member is until the 2027 regular general meeting.”
The AFC Executive Committee is the highest decision-making body of the AFC. It consists of a total of 30 members, including the AFC president, five vice presidents, and executive committee members elected according to quotas allocated to each regional federation.
There are six executive committee quotas allocated to East Asia, one of which was vacant after the AFC general meeting held in February 2023. The election was held at this general meeting in accordance with the AFC Articles of Association that elections for vacant positions will be held at the next general meeting.
Chairman Chung Mong-gyu ran alone in this election, and according to the AFC Articles of Association, his appointment was confirmed without a vote. Along with Chairman Chung, Migona Mahmadarieva (Tajikistan), who ran alone as a female member allocated to Central Asia, was also appointed.
The Korea Football Association said, “Chairman Chung Mong-gyu will be able to express his opinions on the direction and policies of Asian football during his term,” and expected that “he will be able to increase the influence of Korean football on the international football stage.”
