Yaroslava Mahuchik of Ukraine, who holds the world high jump record, is starting his journey toward the gold medal.

Women's high jump world record holder "I left home due to war and traveled around the world to train" "We lost good people who fought for our country"

According to the Associated Press on the 2nd (Korean time), Mahuchik has not been able to spend time at home for the past few years. This is because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

His hometown is Dnipro, Ukraine. Dnipro is a city located just 100km from the front line of the Ukrainian war.

Mahuchik left the village with as much luggage as she could carry in her car. On the way, she saw gunfire and shells raining down.

After that, she traveled to Portugal, Poland, Germany, and Belgium to train and make a living. After

much hard work, she won the women's high jump final of the 2024 World Athletics Paris Diamond League at the Charletty Stadium in Paris, France, clearing 2.10 meters. It is a new world record, surpassing the 2.09 meters set by Stefka Kostadinova (Bulgaria) in 1987.

Now Mahuchik will stand on the stage of the 2024 Paris Olympics. She expressed her determination to win a gold medal for her war-torn country. “I represent my country. Every medal is important for Ukraine,” Mahuchik told The Associated Press. “We want to show people that we will never give up and that we will fight in a difficult and different way.” He continued, “We have lost many good people who fought for the country,” and added, “I play for the Ukrainian people because sports give me warm memories and happiness.”
