Vivian Kong, who brought Hong Kong its first gold medal at the Paris Olympics, has retired due to controversy over her pro-China thesis. The photo shows Kong winning the gold medal in the individual epee event at the Olympics on the 27th of last month.

2021 Thesis Criticizes Pro-democracy Protests, Democrats "Congratulating Kim Was a Big Mistake"

Vivian Kong (30, Hong Kong) won the gold medal in the women's epee individual fencing event at the Paris Olympics, becoming a star loved by all Hong Kongers. The Hong Kong government awarded her a prize of over 1 billion won for winning Hong Kong's first and third Olympic gold medal in this competition, and the railway company MTR decided to give her a lifetime free rail pass.

However, the atmosphere changed when Kong's thesis from the Renmin University of China's Law School was released online. In this master's thesis published in 2021, Kong criticized the 2014 pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and welcomed the Hong Kong National Security Law enacted in 2020 as a result of these protests. It was a support for the Chinese Communist Party, not the pro-democracy protesters. When

the contents of the thesis were made known, Nathan Law, a former member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council who led the protests, and others protested. Law, who is currently in exile in the UK, criticized Kong's gold medal in an interview with the US magazine 'Time', saying, "It was a big mistake to congratulate Kong on his gold medal. Kong's political stance is very problematic."

On the 4th, as the controversy continued, Kong announced his retirement as a player through his social network service (SNS). Kong, who is currently a PhD student in law at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, wrote in his SNS post, "I will continue to learn and grow and do my best to give back to Hong Kong," but did not specifically mention the thesis that sparked the pro-China controversy.
