“Sports aren’t fair if everyone doesn’t go through the same tests.”

Strong sanctions demanded for doping controversy in swimming world “I got blood and urine tests every week”

Michael Phelps (39, USA, pictured), the “swimming emperor” who has won the most Olympic gold medals (23) in history, has demanded strong sanctions against the recent doping controversy in the swimming world.

At a press conference held at Omega House in Paris, France on the 6th, Phelps said, “If you test positive for doping, you should never compete again. It’s heartbreaking to lose victory because of someone’s cowardice after putting in four years of hard work (for the Olympics).”

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Swimming Federation are being criticized for accepting China's explanation that 23 Chinese athletes tested positive for banned substances ahead of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, and that it was due to contaminated food. Nine of them won medals at the Paris Games. It is known that they were also on the Chinese team that stopped the United States' 11-game winning streak in the men's 4x100m medley relay. "I took more tests before the 2008 Beijing Games (where I won eight gold medals). I had blood and urine tests once a week. I won 23 gold medals all on my own," Phelps said.

Phelps, who finished his career as an athlete at the 2016 Rio Games, is working as a broadcast commentator for the Paris Games, following Tokyo. He also participated in the opening ceremony ceremony. When asked about the possibility of returning as an athlete, Phelps said, "I can show my competitive spirit elsewhere. I compete on the golf course these days. Swimming is no longer that place for me." Phelps, known as a 'golf fanatic', also visited the Olympic men's golf course and greeted Kim Joo-hyung (22), a Korean. Phelps played a practice round with Kim Joo-hyung before a golf competition last year.

Regarding Leon Marchand (22, France), who emerged as the new 'swimming emperor' by winning four gold medals at this competition, Phelps said, "I don't think he's trying to become someone else. I'm not upset at all about him breaking my record. I'm looking forward to what Marchand will do next."
