13, more than double the actual target

The Korea Sports Council set a goal of '5 gold medals and ranking within the top 15' for the Paris Olympics this year. There was some talk that the goal was too low. However, the Korea Sports Council explained that it was a 'realistic number'. The number of gold medals won in the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, when 232 athletes participated, was 6. It is said that internally, the Korea Sports Council estimated that if the results were very good, up to 8 gold medals could be won. Korea participated in the Paris Olympics with 144 athletes, the lowest number since the 1976 Montreal Olympics (50 athletes).

As Korea won 13 gold medals, more than double the target number, many people are curious about how the original goal of 5 gold medals was achieved. The Korea Sports Council explained that the number was derived through a 5-step process that included data and expert opinions.

According to the Korea Sports Council, each sports organization first reports to the council the medal prospects of their national athletes participating in the Paris Olympics. Then, the Sports Council Training Center evaluates the current physical condition and athletic ability of the players. The medical staff checks the players’ injuries and health conditions. The international competition results and performances over the past three years are also reflected. Finally, the Sports Council Performance Improvement Committee comprehensively evaluates once again. The Sports Council explains that the numbers cannot be artificially raised or lowered.

Ahead of the opening of the Paris Olympics, Sports Illustrated (IS), an American sports media outlet, predicted that Korea would win five gold medals. Inside the Game, a British media outlet specializing in Olympic information, also predicted that Korea would win five gold medals, citing supercomputer predictions. Gracenote, an American data analysis company that releases the expected number of medals for each country at each Olympics, predicted that Korea would win nine gold medals.
