Hassan won the women's marathon, 42.195 km course held that morning, in 2 hours 22 minutes 55 seconds, setting a new Olympic record. Hassan, who also participated in the 5,000 m and 10,000 m at this competition and won two bronze medals, successfully completed her surprising challenge by winning the marathon as well. Tizist Asefa (Ethiopia) won the silver medal with a time of 2 hours 22 minutes 58 seconds, and Helen Obiri (Kenya) won the bronze medal with a time of 2 hours 23 minutes 10 seconds. Meanwhile, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, awards for the male and female marathoners were presented together at the closing ceremony. Due to the hot and humid weather in Tokyo at the time, the marathon and race walking events were held in Sapporo, and the men's and women's marathons were held together on the last day of the competition. As a result, awards for the men's and women's marathons were presented together at the closing ceremony.
